Typical cargo
Very light, bulky goods where every cubic metre counts: furniture, insulation, packaging materials, and palletised retail goods in Europe.
In plain words
Inside, a 45' HC is about 13.6 m long, with the same width and height as a 40' HC. Its corner fittings are placed like a 40' container, so it can be lifted and stacked on 40' positions on many ships.
45' containers are less common than 40' ones. They are used most on some European short-sea, intermodal, and transpacific services. Not every line, port, or truck chassis can handle them, and road length rules differ by country. Always check that the whole route accepts a 45' before you book.
Example from real shipping
A furniture exporter ships light sofas to a buyer in the United Kingdom on a short-sea service. A 40' HC holds 22 sofas, but a 45' HC holds 25. The line and the trucking company on both ends accept 45' containers, so the exporter books 45' HCs and needs fewer containers per order.
