FCL
Full Container Load
FCL means you book a whole container only for your cargo. Nobody else's goods are inside, even if your cargo does not fill it.
In plain words
With FCL, the container is usually loaded and sealed at the shipper's premises or a warehouse, and opened only by the consignee or by customs. There is less handling, so there is less risk of damage, and it is often faster than LCL because no consolidation or unpacking is needed.
You pay per container, not per cubic metre. As a rough guide, FCL often becomes cheaper than LCL at around 13–15 m³ of cargo for a 20' container, but this depends on the route and current rates. Ask your forwarder to compare both options.
Example from real shipping
An importer has 18 m³ of furniture parts. An LCL quote is based on 18 m³, but an FCL quote for one 20' container costs less in total. The importer chooses FCL, and the container is sealed at the supplier's factory and opened only at the importer's warehouse.
