Customs broker
A customs broker is a licensed professional who prepares and submits customs declarations for importers and exporters, and deals with customs for them.
In plain words
The broker checks your documents, finds the right HS code, calculates duties and taxes, submits the declaration, and follows inspections. In Turkey, customs brokers are called “gümrük müşaviri” and are licensed by the Ministry of Trade. You usually give the broker a power of attorney to act for you.
The broker works with the information you provide. You are still responsible for it being true and complete. Send the commercial invoice, packing list, transport document, and any certificates early, and answer the broker's questions quickly. This is the best way to avoid delays, storage, and demurrage.
Example from real shipping
A company imports its first shipment of LED lamps into Turkey. Its customs broker checks the documents and sees that the products need a conformity document before release. The broker tells the importer before the ship arrives, the document is ready on time, and the container is cleared within the free time.
