Transit time

Transit time is how long the cargo is expected to travel from the start point to the end point. It is an estimate, not a fixed promise.

In plain words

Always check what the transit time covers. Port-to-port transit time counts only from the port of loading to the port of discharge. Door-to-door transit time also includes trucking, waiting at the port, and often customs. The door-to-door time is usually much longer.

Transit times change with the route, the season, weather, port congestion, transshipment, and border queues. Customs checks can add days. Use the transit time to plan, but keep some extra time in your plan.

Example from real shipping

A shipping line shows a port-to-port transit time of 30 days from Shanghai to Mersin. The importer also adds about 3 days for trucking and loading in China, and 3–5 days for customs clearance and delivery in Turkey. The importer plans with about 40 days door to door.
