VGM

Verified Gross Mass

Also known as: Verified Gross Mass · SOLAS VGM · Container weight declaration

VGM is the checked total weight of a packed container: cargo, packaging, dunnage, and the container itself. The shipper must give it to the line before the container can be loaded on a ship.

In plain words

The rule comes from the SOLAS Convention and has applied worldwide since 1 July 2016. Wrong container weights can make ships unstable and cause stacks to collapse, so a container without a VGM is not loaded. The shipper named on the Bill of Lading is responsible for the VGM.

There are two allowed methods. Method 1: weigh the whole packed container on a calibrated weighbridge or scale. Method 2: weigh all the cargo, packaging, and securing materials, and add the container's tare weight (shown on the door). The VGM must be sent before the VGM cut-off, usually through the line's system or a booking platform. Details and allowed tolerances can differ by country.

Example from real shipping

An exporter loads a 40' HC with 18,450 kg of goods, pallets, and straps. The tare weight on the container door is 3,900 kg. Using Method 2, the exporter declares a VGM of 22,350 kg and sends it to the line a day before the VGM cut-off.
